Social media is part of everyday life, but RBTs must be careful about what they post, comment, share, or ask online. Even when a client’s name is not used, posts about sessions, behaviors, families, coworkers, schools, or treatment can create ethical concerns.

This professional development unit teaches RBTs how the RBT Ethics Code applies to social media use. Participants will review social media-related ethics standards, identify risky online posts, practice rewriting posts to protect confidentiality, and learn when clinical questions should be brought to a supervisor instead of posted online.

The training also uses the article “The Ethical Landscape of Behavior Analysis Forums on Reddit” to discuss how ABA-related online forums can be helpful for professional support, but may also create ethical risks related to confidentiality, treatment advice, professionalism, and supervision. The article notes that social media can provide professional networking, resources, study support, and community, but also increases the risk of ethical concerns in ABA-related online spaces.
