Ethical Considerations for Client Consent vs Assent

According to the BACB, assent is “ Vocal or nonvocal verbal behavior that can be taken to indicate willingness to participate in research or behavioral services by individuals who cannot provide informed consent (e.g., because of age or intellectual impairments).” Consumers of ABA services undergo interventions, but they are not always able to provide consent for intervention. Therefore, assent is important to obtain during intervention and/or prior to implementation, when possible. The CEU will discuss assent, the importance, and application to ABA intervention. Participants will learn about the ethical considerations surrounding assent and its importance in ABA, identify strategies for assessing an individual’s readiness to assent, and explain techniques for teaching assent skills.
